March

"Darfur Awareness Week" - Mar. 26-28

Grady High School in Atlanta will be working to raise awareness among students and the local community as they engage in a week-long series of events. On March 28 at 5:30 p.m. David Lefkovits of the Anti-Defamation League will be featured as a keynote speaker. Also, members from Amnesty International will be involved as the events are in conjunction with AI's Week of Student Action. Organized by the Grady student chapter of Amnesty International.

"Stop the Conflict in Darfur" - Apr. 3

As part of the AI Human Rights Week events of Apr. 2-6, Jared Feuer, the southeast regional coordinator for AI, will speak on the Ga. Tech campus in the Student Center Theatre. "Care Even More: Find Your Voice Through Volunteering" - Apr. 9

Sponsored by CARE International, this event is designed to discuss volunteer opportunities working to reduce global poverty with an emphasis on Africa and more specifically, Sudan and the Congo. Derreck Kayongo, native of Uganda, and former refugee in Kenya, will lead the presentation. Derreck’s program will focus on how the CARE organization has developed over the years and will inform participants how they can become advocates against poverty. Learn more about CARE’s special campaigns, including The One Campaign to Make Poverty History, and how CARE is empowering women around the world to be catalysts for change in their communities through the I Am Powerful Campaign. "Art Gallery for Darfur" - Apr. 12

The Walton High School National Art Honor Society and Amnesty International are hosting the Art Gallery for Darfur. Come admire student artwork and enjoy refreshments while helping to raise awareness of and to fight the genocide in Darfur. "Youth Council Town Hall Meeting" - Apr. 14

Sponsored by Congressman John Lewis' Youth Council, this town hall meeting will address the situation in Darfur among several other issues. The meeting will be held on the campus of Emory University in Decatur, Ga. and will begin at 11 a.m. Several speakers will make remarks, including Congressman Lewis and a member of DUACG. Monthly Coalition Meeting - Apr. 19

The monthly meeting of the Coalition will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Howell Mill Road. All members and non-members are welcome to come to the meeting. We'll be discussing the outcomes of the Congressional recess visits and the upcoming Day for Darfur held in conjuction with AIUSA. The meetings generally last about two hours. "Human Chain for Darfur" - April 21

The Northview High School Young Independents will hold a fund raiser to benifit the citizens of Darfur. We will form a human chain along highway 141, Medlock Bridge Rd, to raise awareness in our community of the atrocities taking place in Darfur Africa. "Teach-In and Multi-Faith Prayer Vigil" - Apr. 26

A time to learn more about Darfur, what you can do to help, followed by a multi-faith prayer vigil. Please join us as Mark Bixler, author of "The Lost Boys of the Sudan," speaks on Darfur. This event and our doors are open to everyone. This is a free event. Any dontations given on this day will go to Doctors Without Borders to support their efforts in the Sudan. 6:30 p.m. Christ Covenant MCC, 109 Hibernia Ave., Decatur. "mtvU's Campus Invasion Festival" - April 27

As a part of mtvU's Sudan campaign to stop the genocide in Darfur, proceeds from the festival will benefit the Save Darfur Coalition. Please visit the Darfur booth in the festival village. The concert will feature Fabolous, Monica, Rick Ross, Rich Boy, Crime Mob, Shop Boyz, The Pack and the Best Music on Campus Battle of the Bands winners. "Paulding for Darfur" - Apr. 28

"Global Day for Darfur" - Apr. 29

This event, sponsored by DUACG and organized by AIUSA, is a high-profile event set in downtown Decatur to raise awareness about Darfur. Many different organizations will be on hand at a "Table Fair" to offer resources, volunteer opportunities and provide educational materials about the growing problems in Darfur and other areas in Africa. Not only is this a chance to show your support for the people of Darfur but to find ways to get connected with local community groups. The event will take place in front of the Old DeKalb Courthouse in Decatur, 101 East Court Square. 3 p.m. start. For more information, contact Zak Manfredi or Laura Moye.

"North Georgia For Darfur" - Apr. 29

Crosspoint Community church will hold a service for a time to learn more about Darfur, what you can do to help, followed by a prayer vigil. "Drinks for Darfur" - May 17

This fundraising event will be held at the Park Bench bar in Buckhead. The event features a happy hour from 6:30-9 p.m. with unlimited draft beer. A $10 donation gets you in the door. "DUAC Coalition Meeting" - June 21

The regular meeting of the full Coalition will be held at the spacious home of member Melanie Nelkin, 4650 Dudley Lane, Atlanta, 30327-3305. Attendees will discuss current legislative action. a new consular program, planning for the January rally and will feature Erin Maszursky, former director of STAND, to discuss engaging students in human rights advocacy. Meeting starts at 6:30.

"Darfur Prayer Rally" - June 28

Participants will meet and spend an hour in the field talking together about Jesus Christ and Darfur, and then split into small groups and pray with the groups or individually. The host, Cameron Brewer, says "It will be awesome. We will really seek God's Manifest presence that night, and praise and worship to the heart of God. If everyone who come could donate something, then that would be awesome." Ronald Reagan Park in Snellville. 7 p.m.

"A Weekend For Darfur" - Aug 2-5

This event, held by the Atlanta Darfur Initiative, will be held at several venues throughout the Atlanta area and is designed to raise awareness about the Darfur Crisis. A fashion show, a poetry night, and a political forum are just a few of the events planned by ADI. For more information, please visit their web site above.

"Divestment Workshop" - Aug. 15

We're eager to share with you a great opportunity for our partners in the struggle to save Darfur. We know that in South Africa, divestment measures had a huge impact on bringing down the apartheid policies and restoring a free government. We hope to do the same in Sudan, but we need everyone to learn as much as possible about the divestment movement. To this end, the Coalition is bringing Dan Millenson, national advocacy director for the Sudan Divestment Task Force.

"Regular Coalition Meeting" - Oct. 4

 

Our regular monthly meeting will be held at Oglethorpe University in the Center for Civic Engagement on Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. The CCE is located on the basement floor of the Student Center. "American Democracy Project Conference at KSU" - Oct. 26

 

This conference, featuring the ADP South gathering, will take place Oct. 26 at Kennesaw State University. DUACG wil hold a presentation on student engagement at 10:15 a.m. This 45-minute presentation will discuss the current state of Darfur and how to involve students in advocacy efforts. Students and faculty are admitted free to the event. Participation in the meals with keynote speakers will cost $85. The keynote speaker on Oct. 26 will be Ben Keesey, chief executive officer of Invisible Children, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to helping child soldiers in Uganda. "Torch Relay for Darfur" - Dec. 2

 

This nationwide event will take place in downtown Atlanta and feature runners from all walks of life including Georgia politicians, Sudanese refugees and other supporters of peace in Sudan. "Regular Coalition Meeting" - Dec. 13

 

Our regular meeting will take place on Dec. 13 at Oglethorpe University in the Center for Civic Engagement located on the lower floor of the Student Center. 7 p.m. The public is welcome. We will be discussing the final plans for our Jan. 27 rally and other upcoming events.
