APRIL 29, 2009 IS A MOMENTOUS DAY FOR GEORGIA! GOVERNOR PERDUE SIGNS SB170 INTO LAW
Next Wednesday, April 29, is Day 100 of President Obama's Administration, and STAND as well as other organizations, intend on reaching President Obama "by all means possible."
The Obama administration has been slow to act on Sudan policy.
Granted, the administration was confronted with a host of problems with
which it needed to contend from Day 1. However, President Obama,
Vice-President Biden, Secretary of State Clinton, and UN Ambassador
Susan Rice have all talked a tough game on Sudan policy in the
past--during the campaign, and in their previous jobs. So where's the
dice?
President Obama's administration and the 111th Congress have taken several important steps: President
Obama appointed a special envoy for Sudan ahead of schedule, signaling
the high importance of Sudan in the Obama White House. General Scott Gration has made his first trip to Sudan, and we wish him the best of luck in his new appointment. President Obama took the time to meet with key Darfur advocates to discuss moving forward on Sudan policy. Senator John Kerry, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has made a trip to Sudan, his first in a few years. The US government did not interfere with the indictment of President Omar al Bashir.
On Wednesday, April 29 - Day 100 of President Obama's Administration, TAKE ACTION! An easy way to reach the White House is to call 1-800-GENOCIDE to receieve a prompt before speaking to a telephone operator at the White House. You can e-mail president Obama through the White House website: http://whitehouse.gov/contact/ Facebook-ing President Obama is easy as well! His Facebook profile is: http://facebook.com/barackobama
Don't forget, on Day 100 - we need to let the Obama Administration know that they have a long way to go in regards to the Darfur genocide.
From sending an email or watching a movie to organizing a commemoration event or film series click here for a host of resources during the month of April which is genocide awareness month.
MARCH 4, 2009 MARKED AN HISTORIC DAY FOR THE PEOPLE OF WAR TORN DARFUR
THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT ISSUED AN ARREST WARRANT FOR SUDAN'S PRESIDENT AL-BASHIR
*For up to date information on events and our current GA state action campaign please check below and go to the TAKE ACTION link. For recent press on the ICC's arrest warrant plese go to our NEWS AND OP/EDS link.
MARCH 4TH WAS ALSO AN HISTORIC DAY FOR GEORGIA
Senate Bill 170 (SB170) received unanimous support in the government oversight committee hearing. On MARCH 10TH it received overwhelming support on the senate floor in a favorable 53 to 1 vote.
WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP TO ENSURE THIS BILL NOW GETS PASSED IN THE STATE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
Call your state representative today to ensure that our public funds will not support companies who are funding the regime of an indicted war criminal. *see below on how to find out who your state representative is.
SB170 is a Targeted Sudan Contract Prohibition bill which would prohibit a state agency from entering into a contract with companies that have certain problematic business operations in Sudan. Contracts with state agencies will not be provided to any company that cannot certify that it does not have certain problematic business operations in Sudan. In other words, the worst offending companies doing business in Sudan will not be able to enter into a contract with the state of GA, and indirectly fund the ongoing genocide in Darfur.
For a brief and more information on Contract Prohibition click here. It's important that you find out who your own state representative is
and urge him or her to support SB170. Click this link and type in your zip code.
YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVES NEED TO HEAR THAT YOU WANT THEM TO SUPPORT THIS IMPORTANT BILL.
To find out who your state representatives are click here for easy access to contact information.
Please go to our "TAKE ACTION SITE" link for a script: WHAT TO TELL YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVE.
SB 170 State Contract Prohibition
The Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act of 2007 provides a powerful new tool to pressure companies that support the Sudanese government by authorizing state contract prohibition. State governments sign public contracts with companies that operate in Sudan and through this legislation now have the power to prohibit contracts with certain companies. SADA provides criteria for identifying problematic companies that operate in Sudan's oil, power, mineral and military sectors - sectors that provide revenue primarily for the Sudanese government and at the expense of marginalized populations.
Sudan's oil sector accounts for nearly 90 percent of the country's total export revenue. Up to 70 percent of this oil revenue is used to finance the country's military - which arms, trains and provides military support to the Janjaweed militia that continues to conduct a campaign of murder, destruction, torture, and rape in Darfur. Sudan's oil sector is dependent on these foreign companies for capital, technology and personnel.
Therefore, these companies must use their unique leverage with the Sudanese government to hasten the end of violence and destruction in Darfur. If the Sudanese government continues to be unresponsive to this pressure, companies should cease operations and/or sever economic ties with the regime in Khartoum.
Do you want to prevent Georgia state agencies from contracting with the worst offending companies doing business in Sudan? MAKE THE CALL
THANKS FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE. EVERY ONE OF YOUR CALLS WILL BE LOGGED AND COUNTED IN EACH SENATOR'S OFFICE. click here for a helpful script. CONTACT ADVOCACY DIRECTOR at atlaxn@gmail.com
